Getting people talking about money

Talking about money can be a great way to share tips and advice on best practices that you and your friends and family put in place to make the most of the income that you have. It can also encourage conversations about money worries where recommendations can be made to seek professional support.

With this in mind, we’re supporting Talk Money Week 4-8th November 2024, which aims to break down barriers and make it easier for people to share their thoughts and feelings about money.

Talking about money can be difficult, it can be especially hard to know how to start that initial conversation. Talk Money Week is a great opportunity to kickstart a conversation with friends, family or colleagues. In fact, building money conversations into our everyday lives can help us build the financial confidence and resilience needed to face whatever the future has in store for us.

What is Talk Money Week?

Talk Money Week brings an opportunity to participate across social media and other channels to help people talk about money. The campaign encourages people to have open conversations about money.

This year’s theme is to Do One Thing that could help you improve your financial wellbeing. Why not think about a tip you could share and then inspire others to do the same? By searching #TalkMoney and #DoOneThing on social media, you can see ideas others have shared that you may be able to put into practice.

Why should you talk about money?

With the current cost-of-living pressures, it’s more important than ever to reach out for support if you need financial help. Research indicates that openly discussing money can lead to better and less risky financial decisions, while also strengthening personal relationships. It also sets a positive example for children, helping them develop good financial habits that will last a lifetime. Talking about money can reduce stress and anxiety, helping people feel more in control of their financial situation. By bringing these conversations into daily life your financial confidence will improve and help others around you too.

How can I get involved in Talk Money Week?

You can get involved simply by talking about money, every conversation matters. Talk Money Week have set up hashtags #TalkMoney and #DoOneThing for people to get involved in conversations on social media and tell everyone about the ‘one thing’ you’re asking people to do. They also have communications resources which contain banners, a poster, template copy for your social media channels, intranet and email newsletters, and more.
